The past months have been a whirlwind for the working class, and for our movement. For a few weeks, the collapse of Biden’s campaign plus a botched assassination attempt made a vengeful second Trump term seem almost certain. With his candidacy already weakened by the Uncommitted movement, Joe Biden was ultimately forced to drop out after his disastrous debate performance, creating new hope and renewed optimism for keeping the MAGA movement out of power and averting Project 2025.
With less than 10 weeks left until the presidential election, the stakes are higher than ever. A Trump victory would be catastrophic for the working class, both at home and abroad. A GOP trifecta government means mass deportations, a federal abortion ban, a national right-to-work law, Israel “finishing the job” in Gaza, attacks on queer and trans people, intense repression of the left, and a sharp turn to authoritarianism. Opposing the far right, as represented by the Republican Party under Trump’s neo-fascist leadership, is a necessity for the working class and for our movement.
Socialists are not the only force at work in this moment, but we have an important role to play in the broader movement to defeat fascism and build worker power. Beyond the election itself, mass mobilization and civil disobedience from the left could make or break a second coup attempt. The severity of the national political crisis demands that socialists must intervene to block fascism in the short term, while building towards a revolutionary horizon.
To durably defeat the looming threat of fascism, we must build public support for our bold, positive, alternative vision for society: socialism. We, the undersigned Democratic Socialists of America members, are pledging to organize to grow the left and fight the right by:
- Phonebanking, door-knocking, and fundraising to support downballot DSA campaigns
- Promoting DSA’s program for the United States: Workers Deserve More
- Encouraging workers to tactically vote against Trump and the fascist GOP in key races and swing states
